Point of Sale Terminals (POS) and Printers

For merchants who own a retail business, pos or point of sale terminals are often used to accept credit card payments.  These credit card terminals operate by having the customer swipe their card through the terminal’s magnetic reader.  The reader then transmits a signal to the cardholder’s issuing bank to check and see if they have the allotted funds to cover the transaction.  It then sends a signal back to the machine for processing, and the transaction goes through and is complete.  With today’s modern technology, this process can literally take only a few seconds.  There is a great deal of various transactions terminals available to merchants today.  The make and model will depend on the merchant’s differing needs.  Some have full screens with a touch pad and a signature pad, while others have no screen whatsoever or just a small minimal screen.  The use of debit also has a lot to do with what kind of credit card terminal the merchant will choose.

Of course, in addition to point of sale terminals, printers are also very important to the whole process.  The printer will print out a receipt that is usually in two parts.  The customer signs the receipt, and the merchant can then keep the top copy, while being able to give the customer proof of purchase by giving them the bottom copy.  Receipts are handy for record keeping and can also be used to dispute charge backs later if needed.  Most new models of credit card terminals have a printer already built into the actual pos terminal.  If the terminal does not feature a built in terminal, merchants can always opt to buy a separate printer that will work in correlation with their terminal’s make and model.  Point of sale terminals are a must for retail merchants, making credit card transactions faster and easier for both the business and the customer.
